What is Recruitment fraud?
Recruitment fraud is a sophisticated fraud offering fictitious job opportunities. This type of fraud is
normally done through online services such as fake websites, or through unsolicited e-mails claiming
to be from companies or recruitment agencies such as ourselves. These emails request recipients to
provide personal information and payments to progress false applications.
How to identify Recruitment fraud
- 1. The perpetrators often ask seafarers to complete fake recruitment documentation, such as
application forms or visa forms.
- 2. Company logos are often featured on fraudulent documentation
without authority and may contain examples of poor English and spelling mistakes.

passport details and bank details.
- 4. E-mail correspondence is being sent from free web-based e-mail accounts, in this instance Gmail

- 5. The perpetrators may provide seafarers with a telephone number which diverts directly to a
premium rate line rather than official company numbers. This is costing any caller a large sum of
money.
- 6. The perpetrators may even offer to pay a percentage of the fees requested and ask the candidate to
pay the remaining amount.
- 7. There is an insistence on urgency for the applicant to act on the correspondence received.
What should I do?
- 8. Save messages from the perpetrator for further investigation if necessary. Save the original subject
line, complete headers and complete message content.
- 9. We would advise you to contact your local police or legal authority and provide them with all
information you may have from the senders.
